Suite terraces look out over rice fields The swimming pool at Amanjiwo, the best luxury resort near Borobudur
Amanjiwo's architecture mirrors the Borobudur style

One of the best Indonesia luxury resort options, Amanjiwo is ten minutes from Borobudur
This is easily one of the best Indonesian luxury resorts

OROBUDUR is a place where time literally stands still. This restored Buddhist monument is both the largest and perhaps the most beautiful of its genre, set amidst coconut groves and terraced rice fields on the Indonesian island of Java. Mirroring Borobudur's serene architecture with gracious colonnades ringing a soaring central dome, Amanjiwo (which translates as "peaceful soul"), is an hour's drive from Yogyakarta, and occupies a natural amphitheatre overlooking the domes and spires of the heritage site as well as the cloud-wreathed peak of Mt Sumbing.

Borrowing heavily from the Central Java tradition, Amanjiwo blends effortlessly into the landscape, a masterly brushstroke of design, soothing and mysterious, yet modern. The circular main building leads down to the 34 Suites arcing around the main building, each with a terrace and views of the plains. Suites feature king-size beds, twin vanities, music system and private bar. Later, step into the sunken bath for an after-hour's soak.

Grab a book for a lazy afternoon on your own outdoor bale on the terrace. In addition to regular Suites and Pool Suites, there is also the standalone two-bedroom Amanjiwo Suite that overlooks the resort's stunning mirror-smooth 15m swimming pool. This premier hideaway is in green surrounds set away from the main building.

Guided excursions to Borobudur will no doubt form the centrepiece of your stay and there is much to explore, but guests can also enjoy tennis, massage, meditation, cooking classes, beauty treatments and some time-honoured local Jamu remedies. The Library and Art Gallery offer further distraction while cultural immersion can include trance dances, antique shopping, elephant rides, trekking, and sunset hikes in the Menoreh Hills.

An understated escape from Aman resorts, the quiet Amanjiwo with acres of heritage at its doorstep is easily one of the best Indonesian luxury resorts. It is well worth marking down in your travel diary.
